Shettleston Housing Association Limited, in partnership with a number of other organisations, established a social firm to engage in estate caretaker services, operating within the Shettleston area of Glasgow.


Social firms are defined as: “Businesses created to employ people with a disability or other disadvantage within the labour market. They seek to use their business activities to fulfil a social mission.”

The benchmarks of a social firm are that at least 50% of the turnover of the business should be derived from sale of services or goods to the market and a minimum of 25% of the waged workforce should be people with a disability or other disadvantage. The social firm workforce is fully integrated, with all staff (both able-bodied and disabled) working together collaboratively and enjoying the same rights, responsibilities, terms and conditions of service.

Shettleston Community Enterprises Limited (SCE) was established on 16th December 2004 as a private company (No. 277511), limited by share, and commenced trading in April 2005 under the style of UPKEEP. Although the firm has a clear trading function and aims to generate a trading surplus after its third year of operation, as a non-profit distributing business, all surplus income is reinvested in order to facilitate future expansion and diversification. The Board of Directors oversee the development and management of the social firm and the staff team is directly responsible to the board.
